Robotic Harvester

We played a pivotal role in developing an advanced robotic harvester, collaborating from prototype to final deployment to meet rising market demands and address labour shortages intensified by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Our contributions encompassed redesigning the machine frame and optimizing robotic arm positions, implementing a sophisticated artificial vision system for accurate crop identification, integrating servo control units for precise camera and tool positioning, enhancing data communication between vision, robotic, and automation systems, and overhauling the electrical infrastructure to support these innovations.

The resulting harvesters are now operational in the fields, exemplifying the broader shift towards agricultural automation.

Artificial Vision

Ensuring precise robotic positioning on a bouncing tractor traversing uneven harvesting fields posed a significant challenge.

To address this, we implemented a more robust machine frame to enhance stability and accuracy. Additionally, we developed an advanced artificial vision system equipped with an auto-calibration feature. This system ensures perfect alignment from field product detection through vision imaging to the final robotic picking and dropping positions, maintaining accuracy despite the dynamic field environment.

Systems and Electronics

To ensure the reliability of our robotic harvesters in demanding field conditions, we exclusively utilized high-quality industrial components.

Our system design, software, and electronics integration incorporated robust FANUC robots, renowned for their durability in harsh environments , Mitsubishi Electric PLCs and MELSERVO servo systems for precise motion control , Advantech industrial computers engineered for rugged applications , and high-resolution cameras for accurate crop detection.

These components are interconnected via an internal Ethernet network, enhancing communication speed and reliability while reducing system complexity and potential failure points.

Initially designed for harvesting a specific brassica crop, our robotic harvester has garnered significant interest from customers seeking similar solutions for other products. We are eager to continue collaborating with our clients on the development of tailored harvesting systems that meet the unique needs of various crops.
